Outside of cancer diagnosis, migraines are probably a very painful headache. Migraines are estimated to be the third most common “disease” on earth. In this article, we will share with you a great recipe for quick relief of headaches as a result of migraine. We will use only three essential oils and some other common household items.

Migraine Headache Statistics

Migraine headaches are incredibly debilitating. It is estimated that workers lost every year millions of working hours by suffering from migraines. 37 million people in the United States, suffer from migraines. More women than men suffer from migraines, and are mostly between 35 and 55 years old. Migraines can occur in much younger people, some in their teens. Research shows that 91% of migraine sufferers have to miss work and are unable to function normally during an attack. It’s a lot of pain!

Migraine Headache Symptoms

Some people may experience visual disturbances before intense migraine pain. You may notice the appearance of an aura or small crossed or pointed lines in the field of vision that warn that a migraine will appear. Once a migraine is acquired, in addition to pain, there may be an acute sensitivity to bright lights or loud sounds. There may also be cramps in the head, nausea and vomiting, blurred vision and reading through other unpleasant symptoms.

Most would do almost anything to prevent or stop a migraine if they only knew what to do! Essential oils can offer a surprisingly quick relief to a migraine sufferer. Here’s the recipe …

Recipe for relieving migraine headaches with essential oil

  • 1 medium-sized container that is partially filled with cold (ie chilled) water
  • two cups ice cubes
  • 2 drops of marjoram essential oil
  • 2 drops of ginger essential oil
  • 1 drop of  peppermint essential oil
  • 1 small cloth

Put ice cubes and drops of each oil in a bowl of chilled water. Stir briefly. The oils will float above the water, but that’s okay. Put the cloth in a greasy, icy mixture, and then put the cloth on your forehead, taking care to avoid your eyes (keep the essential oils away from your eyes).

The cloth can also be applied to the sides of the neck where the carotid arteries are located. When the cloth heats up, dip it again in the ice, greasy mixture and continue to apply this ice cream again until the headache subsides. It’s actually amazing how fast it works – usually in 10 minutes!

Migraine essential oils

  1. Marjoram
Marjoram essential oil (Origanum majorana) is a well-known natural analgesic – it helps relieve headaches. It is also an anti-spasmodic, so it helps to release tense, inflamed muscles that mainly accompany migraine headaches.
  2. Ginger
Ginger essential oil (Zingiber officinale) helps relieve migraine-related nausea. It has been intensively studied to affect the gastrointestinal tract. This oil is very effective in relieving nausea and vomiting. It also has pain relieving properties.
  3. Peppermint
Peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita) helps relieve pain. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and digestive agent. Peppermint quickly helps relieve the pain and nausea associated with migraine headaches.

Other factors that help eliminate migraines

The ice coating seems to work in three different ways.

  • First, ice helps to narrow (tighten) the blood vessels of the neck and head, a process called vasoconstriction. This reduces blood flow and it helps to get rid of migraine pain.
  • Second, ice inhibits a person’s ability to feel pain, which is also known as analgesia. Ice is thought to slow pain along the nerves.
  • Third, ice have an effect on the endocrine (hormonal) system, to be able to reduce enzyme activity and slow down metabolic activity.

Keep in mind that there are usually many factors that cause migraine headaches.

Note: You should to seek the advice of a doctor or naturopath to find out why you have migraines.

You might also want to try the services of a trained massage therapist, as triggers can often appear in the neck muscles that create neck and head pain. A massage therapist can help get rid of trigger points and relieve tension in the muscles of the neck and shoulders, helping to relieve frequent headaches.

Another useful natural remedy for migraines is to consult a chiropractor or osteopath. Spinal mismatch can also lead to migraine headaches. Chiropractors or osteopaths can correct these discrepancies. A combination of regular chiropractic and massage visits plus the use of the above recipe for essential oil can be a very powerful help for migraine sufferers.
